For those worried about the dreaded “summer slide,” take a deep breath — learning doesn’t have to stop when school does. In fact, summer can be the perfect time to nurture curiosity and connection in ways that the classroom can’t always capture.

Start small: cook a new recipe together and sneak in some fractions while measuring ingredients. Visit a local park and have your child describe what they see using all five senses — a simple mindfulness exercise that also boosts vocabulary. Build a reading nook with pillows and snacks and set aside “quiet story time,” where reading becomes a shared joy, not a chore.

Learning happens when we make space for it — in nature walks, grocery lists, board games, or even car rides full of questions. It’s about building confidence, not just checking boxes.

And remember: prevention isn’t pressure. It’s about creating meaningful moments that help children (and caregivers!) feel seen, supported, and ready for what’s next.

This summer, give yourself permission to learn, laugh, and rest too. Growth isn’t only for the classroom — it’s for the heart. Check out what Alina Adams has to say: https://youtu.be/Cbpfx4Wrm-Y Including her Reasons for a Summer job
